Digital Labrador Journeys | Italy workshop in Venice and Verona

It’s one thing to go to Italy as a tourist and enjoy all the beautiful sites it has to offer, but it’s another thing entirely to go with Digital Labrador. We will go to the home and studio of renowned Hasselblad photographer Roberto Bigano. He will give us the ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour of his hometown and Venice as only a native Italian can.

Venice: Bridge of Sights

Roberto is well-known in Italy for his photography of the art treasures there, including the original drawings of Leonardo di Vinci.
He will take us on a tour of the collections of fine artworks not available to the average tourist. He will also share his techniques for shooting amazing panorama and overhead images in a way you’ve never seen before. We’ll tour the Manfrotto factory and take home a new tripod. Then we’ll head to Venice with Roberto for an Italian’s tour of the world’s most romantic city.

Not only will he take us to remarkable locations, but he and the Digital Labrador staff will be there to help you get great shots along the way. We will supplement your camera gear with the equipment we bring so that you can use all the great lenses and camera bodies from Canon and Hasselblad on the trip.

Roberto Bigano

Roberto is one of our favorite photographers, and quite unlike anyone we’ve ever worked with. His technical skills and understanding of digital photography are far better than anyone else we know and yet he’s as creative as he is a skilled craftsman. See his website to learn about his use of the Hasselblad multi-shot, his impeccable images of the famous Bugatti cars, and his unique angles on shooting landscapes. He is also a master of working images after the shoot, and will share with us his new ALCE tool, which is sure to become the tool all photographers want when they see the magic it produces.

Digital Labrador’s photographers

Brud Jones, Steve Gibson and Shari Hartbauer will also provide informal instruction on the trip. Whether we’re shooting together in one of Italy’s fantastic settings, or reviewing and helping you edit images each day, you are sure to advance your knowledge and skills as a photographer. We bring plenty of gear for you to use, and offer lots of one-on-one and group instruction besides arranging to get you to ideal places to photograph.

September 5 -Sunday - Arrive Venice
Plan your travel so that you arrive midday in Venice. We will meet up at the hotel and have a light snack prior to going on a short walking tour. The evening will consist of a dinner of your choice either with the group or on your own. We will spend a few hours this evening discussing workflow issues and final logistics for the week’s travel.

September 6 -Monday- Venice
Roberto Bigano will meet us this morning for breakfast and give us an overview of where we are going today. We will have breakfast at the hotel and than head out together to explore the city.
(Dinner tonight is included)

September 7 - Tuesday - Venice
Venice is an amazing and bustling city at any time, but it’s especially interesting in its downtime. Today we’ll explore the city early, when the shopkeepers are sweeping their storefronts and the gondoliers are on their way to work. Roberto will show us the usual places, but mostly he’ll take us on the Venice only a local knows - ‘backstage Venezia’.

September 8 - Wednesday- Bassano de Grappa / Soave
We will spend the day shooting and exploring Soave. The Castle of Soave is a typical medieval military castle. In front of the castle is a drawbridge with a gate built in the 15th century. Remains of a 10th century church are inside the outer walls. The castle holds a museum with artifacts found during restoration and you can visit the castle rooms and courtyards where there are frescoes. The Medieval Walls surrounding the town were built in the 13th century and lead up to the castle. The walls and main gate into town are well-preserved and there's a moat along two sides of the walls. The Palace of Justice, built in 1375 is an impressive medieval building in the center of town. Two other medieval buildings in the historic center are the Palazzo Cavalli and Scaliger Palace have nice gardens.

September 10 -Friday- Verona

This morning we head to Verona, Roberto’s own backyard and one of Italy’s most beautiful cities. On the way we may stop by his studio. Once in Verona Roberto will show us the sites, from Casa di Giulietta you can swoon beneath what popular myth says was her balcony or, if in need of a new lover, approach a bronze statue of Juliet and rub her right breast for good luck. We’ll also choose from the other interesting sites to tour and photograph - the Roman arena, the Arche Scaligere, Castelvecchio, Adige river, Piazza delle Erbe, Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, and more. Tonight we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner since it is our last night with Roberto.
(Dinner included)

September 11 - Overnight Padova
Roberto will show us the final sites and say goodbye. Midday we will head back to Padova and stay outside of Venice for easy access to the airport. Padova is home to the famous Scrovegni Chapel with the famous Giotto frescos on its walls, the second-oldest university in Italy, and the grand Basilica del Santo. It’s a beautiful place to spend our last night together.

September 12 - Leave VeniceEveryone departs on their own schedule and transportation is provided
